Background of the Study

Chronic pain is a prevalent issue among elderly individuals, affecting an estimated 50-80% of older adults worldwide (Yusuf & Ahmed, 2023). Chronic pain can significantly impact an individual’s physical, emotional, and social well-being, leading to decreased quality of life, depression, and a reduction in daily functioning (Ibrahim & Uba, 2024). In Taraba State, where healthcare infrastructure and pain management resources may be limited, elderly individuals often experience inadequate pain management, exacerbating the negative effects of chronic conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, and hypertension (Mustapha et al., 2023).

Effective chronic pain management strategies, including pharmacological treatments, physical therapy, and psychological interventions such as cognitive behavioral therapy, are crucial for improving quality of life in the elderly (Abubakar et al., 2024). Research has shown that comprehensive pain management programs can significantly improve mobility, mood, and overall health outcomes, thereby enhancing the quality of life for older adults (Usman & Bello, 2023). However, the implementation of such strategies in Taraba State remains underexplored. This study seeks to assess the effect of chronic pain management strategies on the quality of life of elderly patients in Taraba State.

Statement of the Problem

Chronic pain is a major issue that negatively impacts the quality of life of elderly individuals in Taraba State. Despite the availability of various pain management strategies, many elderly individuals in the region suffer from inadequate pain relief. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of chronic pain management strategies in improving the quality of life among elderly individuals in Taraba State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of chronic pain management strategies in improving the quality of life of elderly patients in Taraba State.

  2. To identify the specific pain management strategies that contribute most to improved quality of life among elderly patients.

  3. To explore the barriers to effective chronic pain management in elderly patients in Taraba State.

Research Questions

  1. How do chronic pain management strategies affect the quality of life of elderly individuals in Taraba State?

  2. What specific pain management strategies are most effective in improving the quality of life of elderly patients in Taraba State?

  3. What barriers prevent effective chronic pain management in elderly patients in Taraba State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Chronic pain management strategies significantly improve the quality of life of elderly individuals in Taraba State.

  2. Elderly individuals who receive comprehensive chronic pain management report better mobility and mood compared to those who do not receive such management.

  3. Barriers such as limited healthcare access, inadequate pain management resources, and cultural beliefs hinder effective chronic pain management for the elderly in Taraba State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on elderly individuals aged 60 years and above in Taraba State who experience chronic pain. Limitations may include challenges in measuring the subjective experience of pain and the variability of pain management strategies across different healthcare settings.

Definitions of Terms

  • Chronic Pain Management: Strategies and interventions aimed at reducing the severity of chronic pain, including pharmacological treatments, physical therapy, and psychological support.

  • Quality of Life: An individual’s overall well-being, encompassing physical health, mental health, social relationships, and daily functioning.
